Gloria Stavers!

G-L-O-R-I-A!

Van Morrison was 18 when he wrote this 3-chord classic.  Originally released in 1964 as the B-side of "Baby, Please Don't Go," the record is in the Grammy Hall of Fame.  According  to rock lore, famed L.A. rock club the Whiskey a Go Go was the setting for an early jam on "Gloria" between Them and the club's house band, the Doors.

 

 

16 Magazine December '67 Issue

This may be the quintessential late 60's issue of 16 Magazine! The cover features three of the biggest faves in the magazine's history. Mark Lindsay, Peter Noone and Davy Jones also became close friends of Gloria Stavers.  Flowers and paisley abound in illustrator Fred Chance's cultural mash-up as the "16 Tribe", armed with arrows, sports the hip India import look. 

   

Davy Jones and Gloria Stavers at Zilch!

Davy Jones owned a groovy little boutique at 217 Thompson Street in Greenwich Village. Gloria Stavers had intruduced us to the pre-Monkees David Jones when he was a young Broadway star in "Oliver" and a solo recording artist.  Gloria was there to support her friend at the store's opening, and Zilch was immediately flooded with catalog requests from 16 Magazine readers (I wish I had one to show you!)
