When Gloria arrived in New York, P.J. Clarke's was one of the "see and be seen" gathering places, the go-to bar for both celebrities and regular Joes.  The modest brick building at 55th and 3rd dates back to at least 1868, and is now surrounded by skyscrapers.  The saloon has been a favorite of too many famous patrons to list here.  Frank Sinatra "owned" Table 20, and Johnny Mercer penned the song "One for My Baby (and One More for the Road) on a napkin while sitting at the bar.  A stand-in for "Nat's Bar" in the movie "The Lost Weekend," it most recently has been portrayed as a popular hangout for the characters on AMC's "Mad Men."

"The Monkees" Premieres on NBC!

"The biggest thing to hit your TV screens this fall will be Screen Gems' new series, The Monkees, starring Peter Tork, "Wool Hat" Nesmith, Davy Jones and Mickey Braddock.  It's about the trials and tribulations of a way-out rock and roll group.  It's funny, adorable and super-rapid!  Like wow!"  (LAST-MINUTE FLASHES, 16 magazine, Aug. '66) 

On this date in 1966, "The Monkees" premiered on NBC, and 16 Magazine went into full-blown Monkee-mania mode.  Readers were treated to Gloria's exclusive photos of their faves from the show's L.A. set. Although the show lasted for just two seasons, it won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy series, as well as generations of fans through its subsequent reruns.

16 Magazine December '63 Issue

 

Early sixties faves Paul Petersen, Bobby Rydell, Richard Chamberlain, Ann-Margret and Elvis Presley had 16's "seal of approval" in this month's cover illustration.  And three years before "The Monkees" premieres on NBC, Davy Jones makes his cover debut and gets raves for his role in Broadway's "Oliver."  Gloria Stavers has an early bi-line with "Elvis and Ann-Margret - Watch Out - He'll Break Your Heart!" and ... her photo on the back cover surrounded by 16 faves!!  But "Georgia Winters" is still credited as Editor, and is even on the list of "close friends" attending Connie Francis's housewarming party (as reported in GeeGee's Gossip.)
