Today is the day to celebrate the great tradition of the local independent record store. When we were kids, these were the most exciting stores in town! Save up for the latest 45's! Hang out with the cool older teens! Hear records that aren't even on the radio yet! Real record stores are still cool places, and if you visit one today you'll be able to buy some special releases on vinyl and CD that are only available for Record Store Day. Unreleased tracks by the Rollong Stones, Jimi Hendrix, the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, the Doors, the Yardbirds, and the Velvet Underground will take you back to the glory days of record stores!
I'm featuring pictures of Bleecker Bob's on West Third Street in Greenwich Village, open since 1967. Gloria Stavers was such a fan of the folk music scene there that I have an idea she must have roamed these aisles at some point, discovering some of the more eclectic records she raved about in 16.
What was your fave record store when you were a teen?
This place is a little heaven on earth!
