What "Cathy" listening to the radio in 1962 didn't think Mike Clifford was singing just to her? His hit single "Close to Cathy" (produced by Leiber and Stoller) was on the charts for an impressive 12 weeks, and gave the handsome singing star a devoted fan following which he still enjoys today. Mike had been singing since he was a boy with his father Cal Clifford's big band, and other bands came calling as word of his talent spread. His recording career began in 1959, and once he hit the pop charts, he was in demand on television variety shows (he performed three times on The Ed Sullivan Show,) record hops, venues such as the Steel Pier, and nightclubs. He recorded many songs for films, and toured (with fellow GeeGee winner Donna Loren and others) on Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars. Mike also starred as "Teen Angel" along with John Travolta in the first national tour of the musical "Grease."
Mike remembers meeting "Georgia" (Gloria Stavers) with 16 columnist Clay Cole, and also through Mike's manager Helen Noga. Helen's daughter Beverly was good friends with Gloria, and Mike recalls being "awestruck" by her. "She was so tall and gorgeous, and she was so nice to me and everyone she met." Gloria saw Mike's nightclub show and visited him in the recording studio for a 16 story. She was impressed by his style and awarded him with a GeeGee for "Male Singer Star of Tomorrow" in November of 1962. Mike has his GeeGee displayed in his Los Angeles home alongside other treasured memorabilia from his years in show business. Mike says of Gloria, "She was very supportive to me, and I'll always be grateful."
Mike still performs, most often with his singing partner Sandy Zacky. He recently collaborated with drummer Paul Turner and his PT Pops orchestra for a new version of "Mack the Knife," available on iTunes and at CD Baby. You can follow Mike on his "Mike Clifford - Close to Cathy" Facebook fan page. Thanks, Mike for sharing this pic of you and your GeeGee Award!
