Scott Shannon's passion for radio started when he was a young boy setting up a pretend station in his family's basement. He began pursuing his dream of becoming a real disc jockey at age 17. A detour into the army led to his first radio jobs while he was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC and Fort Benning, GA. His service complete, he quickly moved up the ranks of radio from Mobile to Memphis to Nashville. It was there that Scott caught the attention of Gloria Stavers, who awarded him the GeeGee Gold Star Award for "Deejay of the Year" for 1971.
"I was the nighttime deejay at WMAK in Nashville, Tennessee, totally immersed in the world of Rock & Roll music and teen idols when I got the word that I was going to be featured in 16 Magazine. I had never met or even spoken with Gloria Stavers and had no idea how she had become aware of my show, but I sure didn't care. I was just thrilled to be in such incredible company!"
Scott's career continued to soar, with achievements including the creation of the "Morning Zoo" format while at WRBQ-FM in Tampa, Florida. The show became the biggest hit in U.S. radio, and jump started his move into the New York and Los Angeles markets.
Scott would go on to be included in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Radio Hall of Fame, and the Broadcasting Hall of Fame. But with all these impressive honors, he has still held onto his GeeGee award. Says Scott, "This award was definitely one of the first honors I was ever given as a radio personality and I was so happy to see my name in 16 Magazine along side of David Cassidy, Donny Osmond and the others."
Currently, he co-hosts the "Scott & Todd Big Show" on WPLJ-FM Radio in New York City. Scott is also the host of The True Oldies Channel which airs on more than 90 radio stations across the USA and he is the official voice of the syndicated Sean Hannity Show, which is broadcast on 600+ radio stations throughout the US.
Thank you Scott, for sharing your memories and great photos with us!!
